Suspected Boko Haram gunmen on Friday attacked the Department of State Security (DSS) facility in Lokoja, Kogi State releasing about 30 inmates and killing four people including anti riot policeman and three insurgents.
The Gunmen were said to have arrived and immediately made for the cell of the DSS office located along Hassan Katsina Road, Lokoja, and released all suspects kept there after gaining entrance.
This prompted the head of the department to put in a distress call to the police area command who responded with by sending armed officers to tackle the insurgents
A source explained that the combined team of the police and army engaged the insurgents for about three hours before they could be overpowered, after which some of them fled to the bush with bullet wounds.
He disclosed that before the attack, the insurgents had ceased an articulated vehicle, deflated the tyres and used it to block the CBN axis of the road to restrict vehicular movement before carrying out the attack
In the end, About four dead bodies identified as three insurgents and one policeman were left in the scene but most of the inmates escaped in the process
The source also hinted that the officers resident in Zone 8 police barracks and officers in the customs barracks located adjacent to the DSS office were seen relocating their families and belongings to safer places for fear of being hit by stray bullets.
The DSS are yet to make an official statement on the attack though ....
