There is currently drama and confusion in Lagos politics as Mr Clement Ebri, chairman of the primary election committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, says a fresh poll is about to be conducted in the state, and results of today's polls to be cancelled.
Ebri said this at a press conference which held hours after his
committee met with executive officials of the party in the state.
He had earlier distanced the panel from exercise which held earlier in
the day, saying the open ballot used was against the guideline of the
party.
At the conference, Ebri said the committee was determined to do what is right.
Addressing a press conference Tuesday evening, the Chairman of the Lagos Governorship Electoral panel, Chief Clement Ebri, explained the confusion that trailed the exercise.
“We want a victory that will be credible, and will be in line with the
guidelines and rules. We are now ready to do the ground running.
“In the next few minutes, I will contact the national office to inform them that we are now ready for the primary.”
Displaying the result sheet to be used for the primary, Ebri added: “We
were waiting for the Lagos APC chairman to provide some information, but
it came barely an hour ago.
“We have the electoral materials here but considering the Lagos
situation, traffic and all, we will wait on the national office for
action.”
When asked what would happen to votes cast all day, he said: “I
contacted the national office and I was asked to realign with the
position on ground”, before admitting that “we may have to reschedule
the exercise”.
However, the chairman of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Tunde Balogun, has said that the party’s governorship primary held earlier on Tuesday (today) remains valid and that the result will soon be announced.
This was minutes after the party’s National Working Committee panel, led by Mr. Clement Ebri, declared the primary null and void.
Ebri at a press conference at Protea Hotel, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, said the primary could not have held because the guidelines for the conduct of the election were still being ironed out.
But Balogun insisted that the primary had held and that the results would soon be announced.
Balogun said, “Of course, the primary election took place in all the 245 wards in Lagos State and it was peaceful; not a single case of violence was recorded. It was peaceful, it was fair, it was just and transparent.
“The election stands, because it was conducted according to the constitution of our party.
