Romelu Lukaku has had a mixed start to life at Manchester United following his £75 million move from Everton last summer.
While the Belgian striker boasts a reasonably impressive goal return in his debut season - 21 goals in 39 matches prior to this weekend - his performances against the big teams have often been underwhelming.
Lukaku had another opportunity to improve his record against the Premier League’s top six clubs this afternoon, as United went head-to-head with the centre-forward’s former employers Chelsea, and the 24-year-old bagged himself a goal shortly before half-time.
This was Lukaku’s first league goal for Man Utd against a team currently inside the top eight.
Anthony Martial’s clever little lay-off found the Belgium international, who produced a composed finish past his compatriot Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal. He also set up Jesse Lingard's winner with a fine cross. Now that’s how you silence the critics.
What Mourinho had to tell Lukaku in the first half
Lukaku had struggled to get into the game until his goal and was even told by Jose Mourinho at one point where he needed to stand when Chelsea were in possession of the ball. This was spotted by the Manchester Evening News’s Manchester United editor Samuel Luckhurst, who tweeted the surprising information midway through the opening 45 minutes

For Man Utd’s No. 9 to have to be told by his manager where to stand midway through a match is, quite frankly, embarrassing.
This is a player currently earning £250,000 a week.
What’s happening in training if he doesn’t even know where to stand?
Vialli: Lukaku isn't at the level of Man Utd
Interestingly, the former Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli said earlier this afternoon that he doesn’t believe Lukaku is good enough to play for Man Utd.This is per beIN Sports correspondent Tancredi Palmeri, who quoted the Italian as saying: "I'm not a great admirer of Lukaku. He is great v little teams, and average v big teams. His first touch is average too. I don't think he is at the level of Manchester United”.
However, today’s goal and assist at least proved that Lukaku is capable of making an impact against the top clubs.
Is Romelu Lukaku good enough to be Man Utd’s No. 9? Do they need better?
